Getachew has been Head of  Department and a Lecturer, Department of Finance and Development Economics, School of Commerce, Addis Ababa University, since 1996.  Before that, he served as Lecturer and Planning Project Officer at Arbaminch University, Ethiopia, from 1988 to 1995. Getachew  is  a member of the Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Chapter of the Society for Technology Studies, and a member of the Ethiopian Chapter of the African  Technology Policy Studies (ATPS) Network. Getachew holds a BA in Economics and an MSc in Economic Development and Planning, both from from Addis Ababa University.  He is currently working on a PhD through the Institute of Development Research, Tilberg University, The Netherlands.
