Dr. Tobias Schonwetter is Director of the Intellectual Property Unit (IP Unit), Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town (UCT). He has studied and practised law in Germany and the United States, and holds PhD and LLM degrees from UCT Faculty of Law. Schonwetter’s PhD thesis at UCT focused on copyright limitations and exceptions, and he was awarded the UCT Research Fellowship Award for his doctoral studies.

Schonwetter is also the Legal Lead of Creative Commons South Africa (CC SA), and has written numerous articles on IP matters and presented at various national and international conferences.

Before commencing his role as Co-Principal Investigator for Open AIR in 2011, Schonwetter was a Principal Investigator and South Africa Lead Researcher for Open AIR’s precursor network, African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K), between 2007 and 2011. He participated in the researching and authoring of the ACA2K South Africa Country Report and Executive Policy Brief of 2009, and the 2010 ACA2K Comparative Review of Research Findings: Copyright and Access to Knowledge in Eight African Countries.
