Esther Ngom is a Pupil Advocate at Nkana law firm in Yaoundé and founder and CEO of NES Consulting, an intellectual property (IP) consultancy. Ngom’s focus is on issues at the intersection of IP law and Africa’s development, including the traditional knowledge (TK) commons, geographical indications, and collaborative agricultural branding.
Ngom has extensive knowledge of IP issues in Francophone West and Central Africa, particularly in respect of the member countries of the Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OAPI). Ngom holds an LLM in IP Law from the University of Yaoundé II – Soa, and has done research on: IP arbitration judgements; TK, medicinal plants and patented drugs; the trademark systems of OAPI and the EU Office of Harmonisation for the Internal Market (OHIM); trademark ownership claims in OAPI; and industrial designs in relation to Cameroonian development. She joined Open AIR in 2012 as a Research Fellow.
